There must always be a very wide overlap between human "culture" on the one hand and "religion" on the other. (religion is a word I detest, but it will have to suffice here.) In simpler times there was no delineation between the two. Bragg is saying that if we are to respect human cultures and civilisations then we need to respect their religion also. It's all about STORY but it has to be a story in which man can be a part. "Religion" (initially) is nothing if not a creative act.
